RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
